The establishment of Kastura Ba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) by the central government in 2004 was a special program implemented by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to encourage girls' education. The objective of the program is to reduce the gender disparity gap and promote gender equality in relation to girls' primary school education.
The criteria for starting KGBV schools is to encourage educationally backward blocks with lower than national rural female literacy rate (46.13%) and higher than national gender disparity rate (21.59) based on 2001 census.

- KGBV (Type-3) Residential Schools, (6th to 12th Class)- 8
- Total no of 74 KGBV residential schools are functioning.

KGBV Schools Admission Rules:
- 75%reservation for SC/ST girls belonging to Backward Class, Minorities and for girls from below poverty line families, 25% reservation for orphan girls, rescued from Devadasi system, undereducated girls rescued from child labour sale and trafficking.
- Giving priority to out-of-school and drop-out girls and then enrolling other girls.
Facilities at KGBV schools:
- Supply of good quality nutritious food.
- Girls stipend (Per annum per girl Rs.1200/-)
- Computer education.
- Miscellaneous like, Soap, oil, tooth paste, sanitary napkins are also provided.
- Stationary articles like notebooks, pen, paper, geometry box and textbooks are provided.
- Medical check-up in schools: Regular health check-up camps are organized in KGBVs with support from local doctors and hospitals.
- Personality development education including music, yoga, karate and Cultural programmes.
- Learning opportunity of vocational skills such as sewing, embroidery,
doll making and repairing electronic items.
- Parallel methods of learning for slow learning children.
- Extension of different departmental programmes, conducting guest lectures and seminars.

Girls Hostel:
To prevent girls who have completed 8th standard in schools from being deprived of high school education, hostels have been started in 2009-10 by the Central Government for students studying in class from 9 to 12th standard in the ongoing backward taluks.

Aishwarya studied in our KGBV 2017 to 2019. She was from Tenkalakoppalu village a remote area of Hunsur Taluk. She studied 6th std in her village HPS schools were too far away from her home. During our field visit we met her mother and convinced to their family to join our kgbv.
She joined 7th standard at that time. She was a introvert child. Then we done regular counseling to her, slowly she participated our school activities actively after 8th standard she joined government high school at Hunsur.
In puc she took science combination, scored 70%. Then she done airhostess training at Vision fly institution in Bangalore. In this course she got A grade. Now she is working in Hydrabad airport as airhostess.
