Teachers Training Program

Background: In-service teachers need to be provide with necessary training from time to time to enhance their professional competencies and skills. The training not only enhances their teaching skills but also improves their classroom management, promotes professional growth, and helps them to adapt changing educational needs. Training for teachers plays a key role in improving student outcomes and creating a more positive and effective learning environment. Purpose: The teacher training program aims to prepare and equip teachers with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to effectively teach students through innovative teaching methods and foster a positive learning environment. Training provides to teachers to enhances their teaching skills, promotes their lifelong learning and helps them incorporate the latest educational research into their teaching. Scope: Teacher training covers the scope of how they can effectively perform their duties in the classroom, school and wider community. Training includes programs, policies and processes designed to equip teachers with knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors. Training develop innovative teaching, efficient classroom management and effective leadership in teachers. Grant availability: Grants are approved and released by the PAB every year to conduct in-service teacher training to enhance the professional capacity of Primary and Secondary school teachers. The said grant will be used to conduct training programs at the District and Block level through DSERT. Some training programs are also conducted by DSERT at no cost. The following various training programs were conducted through DSERT in the year 2024-25. 1.    IISc training Purpose:·       The main objective of the project is to address the learning gap in education using hands-on experiments at the high school level using innovative concepts to train teachers.·       This training is planned to be conducted every year from the month of July to the end of February.·       Aim to train 500 government and aided high school teachers every year.    Project Design: ·       IISC conducts a 10-day residential training for a total of 120 Maths and Science teachers in each batch.·       In this training, 10 to 12 hours per day activity based training will be given for teaching 8th, 9th and 10th class subjects.·       More than 25 lectures are given in Mathematics and more than 300 problem solving skills are developed.·       In science subject 05 days are allocated for Physics, 02 days for Chemistry, 02 days for Biology and 01 day for general subject.·       60 mathematics teachers and 60 science teachers will be invited for training in 01 batch. ·       Pre-test on the first day of training and achievement test on the last day of training and performance tests based on the units of the mid-course text book are conducted to compare the learning progress of the teachers with the pre- and achievement test. 

For the year 2024-25, Rs. 43.30 lakhs have been released under Head of Account 2202-01-109-0-08-059. A 10 days training will be held at IISc Chalakere for high school teachers who teach Mathematics and Science, and it is planned to train a total number of 300 teachers for this year. The training has started from November and 293 teachers have been trained in 3 batches. Total Rs. 38.97 lakhs have spent for this training.

  1. Content enrichment:

Background:

Changes need to be brought in the professional development programs of teachers according to the present scenario. Teacher development cannot be realized through short-term annual plans. Guruchetana is a long term project, in this background. The curriculum for the program was created.

In the year 2017-18, a Guruchetana program has been designed for government school teachers to facilitate learning in classes 1 to 8. In this program, training modules have been prepared in Kannada, Hindi, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Nali Kali, Educational Orientation and Physical Education subjects. So far 175 modules have been created. In the year 2025-26 creation of Content Enrichment modules are planned.

Project Details:

Till now 175 modules have been created in the Guruchetana program and a total of 1,45,738 in-service teachers of classes 1 to 8 have been given TTMS option based training. This training program is unique in that mandatory trainings are organized according to teacher selection and local needs. In the year 2025-26 creation of 27 Content Enrichment modules are planned.

Objectives:

In the year 2023-24 we have prepared modules under zero budgets from all 34 DIETs and for the year 2024-25 we planned to make batch creation for those modules. Rs. 10.50 lakhs has been released under account head 2202-01-109-0-08-059 for 7 districts namely Davangere, Kolar, Tumkur, Bellary, Chikkamagaluru, Mandya and Mysore districts 1.50 lakhs for each and Totally Rs. 8.54 lakhs have been spent for this training and batch creation work is in progress.

  1. Ganitha Ganaka:

Ganitha Ganaka, an initiative by the Government of Karnataka, aims to enhance foundational numeracy for students in grades 3-5 through personalized 1 to 1 phone tutoring. Following a successful pilot in Soraba and Raichur, the program has now expanded to 93 aspirational blocks across 17 districts in 2024-25. Training for the scale-up has been completed, with 68 Master Resource Persons (MRPs) training ~1,300 Cluster Resource Persons (CRPs), who in turn trained ~33,000 teachers. As part of the training process, we also developed multiple videos on Ganitha Ganaka for teachers, along with video resources for MRPs and CRPs to support effective training and implementation. Additionally, we conducted a YouTube live stream with the help of DSERT for all teachers, CRPs, and field officials to ensure broader outreach and clarity on the program. Teachers have now begun tutoring Four students each over five-week cycles, reinforcing basic math skills with parental support. 

Implementation is in full swing, with reports already received from over 1,000 of 1,398 clusters. As of now, nearly 1,80,000 phone tutoring calls have been made by approximately 24,000 teachers, as reported by CRPs. More than 2 lakh calls have been logged through the WhatsApp bot, ensuring transparency and monitoring of student progress.

Strong student engagement and positive shifts in parent-teacher relationships.

With ongoing support from the government and partners—Alokit (Strategy & Implementation), J-PAL (Monitoring & Research), and Youth Impact (Knowledge)—Ganitha Ganaka is set to create a lasting impact on math learning in Karnataka.

In the year 2024-25, Rs. 1,16,88,000 has been released for Ganitha Ganaka Training under Head Account of 2202-02-107-0-06 Abhyudaya Yojana 051 General Expenditure. Out of this, training was organized for 72 MRPs on October 15 and 16, 2024 at DIET Mandya. A total of 66 MRPs and 6 SRPs participated in this training. A total of Rs. 1,50,307/- has been spent on this MRP training.

Ganitha Ganaka Teacher Training is being held in 17 districts of the state, with a total target of 34960, so far a total number of 35,142 teachers including CRPs have been trained. Totally Rs. 70.07 lakhs have been spent so for.

  1. Marusinchana Training:

The Marusinchana Programme is an initiative of the Government of Karnataka, as announced in the Budget speech of 2023-2024 & 2024-2025. Transform Schools, People for Action is the technical support partner. This is a ~50 hours per subject per class per year learning programme spread over five academic years and aims to strengthen the foundational and pre-requisite competencies, bridge the learning gaps, and enable classes 6-10 students to attain class-appropriate learning levels. The programme also seeks to improve the quality of SSLC results.

In its first phase of rollout in 2023-2024 & 2024-2025, Marusinchana targets all Kannada medium government high schools and composite colleges in 69 aspirational talukas across 17 districts of Karnataka. It covers the subjects of English, Kannada, Science, Social Science, and Maths. The initiative works with 46,554 teachers in 8,821 schools. To ensure quality implementation, the State Resource Group, Master Resource Persons, officials, Head Teachers, and teachers are trained and oriented, with impact measured by the percentage of teachers trained and the change in knowledge pre- and post-training.

Marusinchana 6th to 7th class Module creation, MRP and teacher training:

Rs. 13,17,089/- has been released to 5 districts (DIET Tumkur, Mysore, Davangere, Bangalore Urban and Shimogga) for Module creation of Marusinchana 6th and 7th class and the Module creation work has been completed and so for Rs. 9.39 lakhs have been spent for this module preparation.

Rs. 14,00,000/- has been released for MRP training of Marusinchana 6th and 7th class. A total of 340 targets have been set, and 321 targets have been achieved so for. Totally Rs. 9.14 lakhs have been spent for this MRP training.

Marusinchana 6th and 7th class teachers training have target of 36520 teachers. So far, 31009 teachers have been trained. Totally Rs. 169.95 lakhs have been spent.

 

 

Marusinchana 8, 9 and 10th class literature creation, MRP and teacher training:

Rs. 7,77,710/- has been released to 5 districts (Diet Tumkur, Mysore, Davangere, Bangalore City and Shimogga) for Module creation of Marusinchana 8, 9 and 10th class and the Module creation work has been completed and for this Rs. 7.72 lakhs have been spent.

A total of Rs. 10,20,000/- has been released by the SSK State Office for MRP training of Marusinchana 8, 9 and 10th class. The total target of this training is 344, of which 333 targets have been achieved so far. Totally Rs. 9.99 lakhs have been spent.

Rs. 90,30,600/- has been released for the training of 10034 teachers of Marusinchana 8, 9 and 10th class. So far, 9169 teachers (including guest teachers) have been trained. Totally Rs. 83.47 lakhs have been spent so for.

  1. PAB Approved In-Service Teacher Training:

Under the PAB Approved Activities for the year 2024-25, Rs. 519.1550 lakhs has been released from the SSK State Office in the first installment for In-service teachers training for Primary (6 to 8) teachers. The target is 20,767 teachers. So far, 19,343 teachers have completed the training and Totally Rs. 505.99 lakhs have been spent for the training.

Under the PAB Approved Activities for the year 2024-25, Rs. 235.893 lakhs has been released from the SSK State Office in the first installment for In-service teachers training for High School (9 to 10) teachers. The target is 9439 teachers. So far 8168 teachers have completed the training and Totally Rs. 227.98 lakhs have been spent for the training.

  1. Nali Kali and English Nali Kali Training:

In addition to the 2024-25 academic year, the Nali Kali Kosha has released Rs. 21,51,000/- to organize training of resource persons at the district level in relation to the Nali Kali and English Nali Kali program. A total of 1195 targets have been set, including MRP and teachers, and 1146 targets have been achieved so far. Totally Rs. 18.25 lakhs have been spent.

  1. Induction Training:

10-days Induction training was organized for newly recruited (2022-23) primary school (graduate) teachers. In connection with this training, the first MRP training was organized in DIET Mandya and made successful. A total of 136 MRPs were targeted and the target was achieved fully. A total of 10,40,400 was released for MRP training and an expenditure of 7,99,780/- was incurred.

Similarly, 10-days induction training for teachers was organized in 21 districts of the state and in the first phase of 5 days training was completed. The second phase of training is in progress. Its total target is 6209. So far, 5496 teachers have been trained in the first phase of training. A grant of Rs. 1,70,74,750/- has been received from TBF for this training. A total of 141.32 lakhs has been spent on this training so far.

  1. Ganitha Kalika Andolana:

GKA 1.0 Maths kit has been supplied to all the government schools in Karnataka. Nearly 80% of the Maths teachers teaching for grades 4 th and 5 th have been trained face to face. During 2023-24, Akshara Foundation along with the Department of State Educational Research and Training.

DSERT created the GKA Online Teacher Training Course. Working towards this goal, a workshop of 10-12 Resource Persons from DSERT along with an E-content team was held at AksharaFoundation. In addition to this around 5 tele-conferences were conducted in collaboration with DSERT at DSERT studio in 2024 and 2025 to re-cap the training modules.
